Chair's Welcome

by Shari Veil

Welcome back to students, faculty, and staff! We have the slightest hint of fall in the air this morning and campus is hopping with everyone back and ready for the new year.

I may be an old face by now, but this is the first time I am writing the fall welcome newsletter as Chair of the Department of Communication. You can learn a little more about me in this video

Dr. Kelly McAninch also has now officially joined the leadership team as Director of Undergraduate Studies.  Her video is in the works! We are excited to lead an incredible team of staff, faculty, and graduate student teaching assistants.

The students truly are our pride and joy, and we are pleased to congratulate our Outstanding Senior, Hannah Davis, and our two Outstanding Juniors, Joshua Morris and Destiny Witherspoon who received their awards and scholarships at the Student Awards Reception in April. Check out this video to learn more about how scholarships impact our students. You can help meet our growing scholarship needs by donating today

At the College of Communication and Information Awards Dinner this spring we were honored to share in the recognition of Dr. Marko Dragojevic who won the College Award for Excellence in Research and Dr. Don Helme who won the College Award for Excellence in Community Service.

Then, in May, we learned that Dr. J. David Johnson was awarded a University Research professorship. The UK Board of Trustees established the University Research Professorships in 1976 to recognize outstanding research achievements.

Dr. Anthony Limperos was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. In addition, Dr. Kevin Real and Dr. Derek Lane were both awarded research sabbaticals for the 2017-2018 academic year. We are so proud of our colleagues and look forward to the results of their research.

We are excited to announce that Dean Dan O'Hair and Provost Tim Tracy have authorized the hiring of FOUR new faculty! We cannot wait to meet the candidates for these positions and introduce you to our new faculty next fall. We are also hiring student workers to our department team. Our talented students help with everything from classroom set up to social media to preparing this newsletter. We wouldn't be as successful without their help.

This is an exciting time for the Department of Communication. We graduated our largest senior class ever last spring and we are welcoming our largest freshmen class ever this fall. Communication is now among the fastest growing majors across the University of Kentucky. The demand for skilled communicators in the workforce has steadily risen, and we are excited to see this upward trend continuing. Please keep us updated on your latest career moves by filling out this alumni profile. And, if you are hiring an intern or a new staff member to your communication team, please let us know and we will send out the information to our eager students on the job market this year.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or comments about what is happening in the Department of Communication. We want to hear from you!
