Chair's Welcome

The end of the semester is always bittersweet. This newsletter is filled with celebration and success, including another fantastic internship fair, Kentucky Conference on Health Communication, and awards for our outstanding students and faculty. We also say goodbye to our colleagues and friends, Professors Doug Boyd and Cyndy Miller, who are retiring at the end of the year, and to the Grehan Journalism Building that has been our home for nearly 70 years. Thank you for your continued support and have a great summer!

Spring 2018 Internship Fair
Organizations that participated in the CI Internship Fair this year came from a variety of industry sectors including technology, marketing, political, and nonprofit.

Shannon Kidd, Director of Stadium Operations and Human Resource Manager of the Lexington Legends, has participated in several of the fairs.

“This is one of the best internship fairs we attend. The staff has everything well organized and there is always a good number of quality students that participate. The Lexington Legends have enjoyed being a partner with the UK College of Communication and Information. Together we focus on giving students learning opportunities,” said Kidd.

The fair was the highlight of multiple events hosted by the College of Communication and Information designed to help CI majors learn more about internships as well as prepare for their careers.

A resume workshop, hosted by the Communication Student Association, was offered the day before the fair, giving students a chance to meet one-on-one with communication faculty to polish their resumes. The day after the fair, the college hosted an information session reviewing the internship procedures.

The three events gave CI majors an opportunity to learn about possible internships, meet with potential future employers in-person, and learn more about what they need to enter the workforce.

Areanna Orr, a junior Health Communication major, said, “After talking to a lot of the representatives at the fair, I have decided to add some business communication classes to compliment the health communication component.”

Thank you to all the organizations that came out to recruit our students.

2018 Kentucky Conference on Health Communication

The Department of Communication hosted the biennial Kentucky Conference on Health Communication this April.

The overall aim of KCHC is to promote health communication research and practice; the conference is an internationally-recognized venue for researchers, practitioners, and students to come together to share research on a variety of health-related topics, discuss current health communication issues, and develop working relationships to promote the health communication research and practice agenda.

The theme of the 2018 conference was 21st Century Cures Act: The Role of Communication and Information Science, and the preconference focus was Interventions to Improve Patient Involvement across the Cancer Control Continuum.
Congratulations on Retirement

During his time at the University, Dr. Doug Boyd held several positions, including Professor, Dean of the College of Communications and Information Studies, Associate Provost for International Affairs, and Chief of Staff in the Office of the President. Dr. Boyd’s research focuses on international communication and Middle Eastern electronic media, which he talks about in this interview.

A dedicated lecturer in the business and organizational communication track, Professor Cyndy Miller has also served as the internship director in the Department of Communication. Under her direction annual internship placements increased over 30% and business participation increased over 100%. Cyndy has helped place upper-level students in nearly 250 local, national and international businesses, non-profits and health care institutions.

While we celebrate their distinguished careers, we will miss them greatly and know the Department will not be the same without them. Congratulations to both professors on a well-earned retirement!

Farewell, Grehan Building!

This summer the Department of Communication will be moving out of the building that has been its home since 1951. Grehan Journalism Building will be undergoing a complete renovation as part of a larger project to make campus more contemporary.

We will keep you posted on the renovations while we settle into our temporary home in Blazer Hall.
