COM and ISC Students: Each student in each section of all lower division Communication courses (COM 101, 249, 252, 281, 287, 311, 312, 313, 314, 315, 316, 317, and 318) and students in ISC 161, 261, and 321 will be required to participate in communication research or complete the alternative written assignment.
Each student in each COM/ISC course mentioned above must complete:
1 research credit = 1 COM/ISC SONA research study or alternate written assignment
Students must complete the research requirement for each course in which they are enrolled in a given semester up to two courses. If you are enrolled in 3 or more such COM/ISC courses, you will not be required to complete more than 2 credits. Instead, the Department of Communication SONA pool administrator will provide you with “free credits” the student can use to apply to the additional classes. The COM/ISC SONA administrator will provide students with these credits by Friday, March 20, 2020. Students are responsible for using these additional credits to apply to their classes beyond the first two. No additional communication with the instructor is needed, as the credit will appear just as another credit, but it must be applied to the course by the student. Please note: COM/ISC SONA requirements are different from the SONA requirements/pools that may exist in other Colleges and units and must be completed separately and in addition to any other SONA requirements set forth by those other Colleges and units. COM/ISC SONA credits are only good for COM and ISC classes, whereas CIS SONA credits must be used for CIS classes, PSY SONA credits must be used for PSY classes, and MKT SONA credits must be used for MKT classes (you get the idea)!
The Departments of Communication and Integrated Strategic Communication are committed to involving undergraduate students in scholarly research so that they may understand the importance of generating new knowledge at the University of Kentucky as a major research institution.
Students enrolled in an eligible ‘COM’ or ‘ISC’ class are required to earn research participation credit by either participating in communication research or completing the alternate written assignment. (If you are enrolled in additional COM/ISC courses that have research requirements, you are responsible for participating in additional COM/ISC SONA research studies, up to a maximum of 2 studies/credits).
SONA participation counts for 5% of your final grade in the class. If you complete your participation obligations, you will earn the full 5%. Failure to either (a) participate in a research study or (b) complete the designated alternative assignment will result in 0 credit earned toward this assignment, worth 5% of your total grade. It is your responsibility to regularly check the SONA website to keep track of the completion of your research credit and the deadlines and dates of the research studies.
Note: Credit for participation is awarded by the researcher within a week of participation and all credit will have been awarded by Sunday, May 3rd, 2020. If you have a question as to whether you have met the study requirements, please contact the researcher.
Alternative Written Assignment
Students who are under 18 years old, are absent from a research study for which you signed up, or prefer to not participate in a research study, may sign up for an alternative assignment for SONA credit. This assignment includes reading a scholarly communication research article and writing a two-page summary. Details of this alternative written assignment are posted on the SONA Alternative Assignment study page in SONA.
One two-page written assignment will equal one research credit.
Students who choose to fulfill their research requirement by completing the alternative written assignment should sign up in SONA by the signup deadline of Friday, March 13th, 2020, but can continue to signup until Friday, May 1st, 2020. Students completing the alternate assignment must submit it through the “View Study Website” link found on the Alternative Assignment study page in SONA by 11:59 pm on Friday, May 1st, 2020. You must sign up for the alternative assignment in the SONA system before submitting your paper.
Failure to Fulfill Requirements
If a student in an eligible COM or ISC class does not fulfill one research requirement by participating in a research study or completing the alternative written assignment, then the student will not receive credit for this assignment, worth 5% of their final grade.
General note: Electronic correspondence from the University, including SONA, will be sent to your official University Email Address (UEA), as defined in the UK Account Manager. It is your responsibility to regularly check this account or forward this address to an account that you will check regularly. - Sign up through the SONA system for a research study or for the alternate assignment by the signup deadline of Friday, March 13th, 2020. After this date, students may still sign up for research studies, but there is no guarantee that more studies will be available.
- Participate in the research studies for which you sign up. All studies will be closed after Friday, May 1st, 2020. Credit will be awarded within one week of participation and no later than Sunday, May 3rd, 2020.
- Assign earned credit to the appropriate class and section by logging into SONA. Click ‘My Schedule/Credits’ for an overview of studies and classes. You will have until Friday, May 8th, 2020 to assign credits to your classes.
Complaints or concerns
Complaints about research study credit assignment will be directed to the researchers. Students also may complain to their instructor, who will refer complaints to the Department of Communication Chair for mediation. Students with questions related to the SONA system can contact COMSONAHelp [at] gmail.com. Students can also contact the Office of Research Integrity if they feel a researcher did not award appropriate credit for a study or alternative assignment, or if they have concerns about the conduct of a given study or administration of an alternative assignment.
- You may sign up for studies between January 31st and March 13th (Friday of midterms). After this date, you may still sign up for any available research opportunities until the final deadline of May 1st (Friday after Dead Week), but there is no guarantee that more studies will continue to be offered. (The alternative assignment will remain available until Friday, May 1st, 2020).
- You must complete all studies you signed up for by Friday, May 1st, 2020 (Friday before dead week), including the alternate assignment.
- All research credit must be assigned to your class(es)/section(s) in SONA by Friday, May 8th, 2020 (the last regular day of classes).

SONA studies are added as they are approved, so you may notice that sometimes there are no available studies . If none of the studies have spots available, check back later to see if new studies have been added.
