organizational communication, military communication, high reliability organizations, multiple methods
I believe in a syncretic approach to research and therefore use both qualitative and quantitative research methods. My research focuses primarily on organizational communication and specifically examines how occupational identity is formed, adopted, and communicated by members of high-reliability organizations (e.g. military, police, firefighters). Other areas of interest include intercultural communication and game studies.
I have published 10 peer-reviewed journal articles and have presented over 25 papers at international, national, and regional conferences, including two Top Paper presentations. I was awarded Master’s Thesis of the Year by the Master’s Division of the National Communication Association in 2017 and in 2019 received the Stanley L. Saxton Applied Research Award from the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research.
I served in the United States Army as a combat medic and deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. After leaving the military I earned both my Bachelor and Master of Science degrees at Texas Christian University in communication studies. Upon graduation from TCU I attended the University of Oklahoma for my Ph.D. work and was advised by Dr. Ryan Bisel.
