If you are interested in becoming a Communication Major, complete an application in 107 Grehan Journalism, College of Communication and Information Studies office.
- If you entered UK during the 2011-2012 academic year, you’ll follow these Lower Division requirements.
- If you entered UK prior to 2011, you may have options. Contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies (Deanna Sellnow) at Deanna.Sellnow@uky.edu or at 257-2886 for more information about being admitted. Essentially, if you have an overall GPA of 2.0 and complete the following lower division COM courses (or the new gen ed requirements at the link listed above, you WILL BE ACCEPTED INTO UPPER DIVISION as a COM major.
Required Beginning Courses for Comm
The Department of Communication requires ALL majors to take:
- Introduction to Communication Theory (COM 351W) and
- Introduction to Communication Research Methods (COM 365), also known as ‘Cohort’, in the same semester. Learn more about these required classes.
Entrance to COM 325 as a Lower Division Student
This course considers approaches to the practice and study of communication within organizational settings. It counts towards your 15 hours of required COM courses.

To enroll in any upper-division (300+ level) COM course, any student who is not a Communication major must complete an Override Request Form.
