Internship Program

The Department of Communication Internship course (COM 399) offers Communication majors the opportunity to gain experience in communication through work in industry, government, education, and non-profit organizations. This course is pass-fail only and may be repeated to a maximum of six credits. A maximum of three credit hours may be counted toward the communication major. The student works 50 hours for each credit hour earned. For example, for three credit hours the student works 150 hours over the course of the semester (approximately 10 hours a week during the Fall and Spring semesters and 20 hours weekly during the Summer II Session).

In order to be enrolled in COM 399, you MUST meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a declared Communication major and been accepted to upper division status.
  2. Have successfully completed at least six hours of 325-level or above Communication courses.
  3. Have a 3.0 GPA in pre-Com and Communication courses (including COM and cognate courses). You can find this GPA in your degree audit in the line chart.

Ready to get started? Just follow the steps on the Internship Checklist.  Your first step is to apply if you are eligible.  We enroll you in the course based on your application – you cannot enroll in Com 399 on your own.

Summer Interns

Although you will be enrolled in the 8-week session, you may begin and end your internship whenever you wish as long as you have fulfilled all your requirements by the day before the session ends (in August).  All summer interns will receive an e-mail from me the week after spring finals.  It will contain reminder information about your assignments and other obligations. The e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address with which you apply.  If you do not receive an e-mail, it is your responsibility to contact me.
