Growth and Renewal in the Department of Communication

After a dormant winter, spring is a time of growth and renewal. In the Department of Communication, this year has been one of significant growth and change. We are growing in terms of the number of students we serve, courses we are offering, and programs that we lead. We are also surviving, and even thriving, in a challenging economic environment for higher education by aggressively pursuing new community partnerships, research and instructional opportunities. Faculty Updates--Dr. J. David Johnson recently published his eighth book, entitled Dosage: A Guiding Principle for Health Communicators. The book outlines the best practices for communication in a health care setting.

--Dr. Shari Veil recently received an “Education Abroad Program Site Visit” grant, which she will use to set up a new education abroad site in Brussels, Belgium. Read more about Study Abroad Opportunities for Communication students…

--Ms. Cyndy Harbett Miller won the the University of Kentucky Alumni Association’s 2014 Great Teacher Award.

--Dr. Elisia Cohen was recently awarded the 2014 Sarah Bennett Holmes Award, sponsored by the UK Women’s Forum. The award is granted annually to “women working at the University who promote the growth and well-being of other women at the University and across the Commonwealth."

--Dr. Douglas Boyd has been notified that he will be the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Education Service Award. The Distinguished Education Service Award is awarded by the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) yearly, “to an individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the American system of electronic media education by virtue of a singular achievement or continuing service for or in behalf of electronic media education.” This year’s award will be presented this April at a ceremony during the BEA_conference in Las Vegas.

Alumni Updates--Dana A. Stefaniak (née Skinner) ('92) is the Resource Development Director at Lexington Habitat for Humanity. She and her husband own Cosi Restaurants in Lexington.

--Terry Hapney, Jr. was named West Virginia Public Relations Educator of the Year by the Public Relations Society of America-West Virginia chapter during summer 2013. He is an associate professor of public relations in the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Marshall University.

--Beth Kuhnhein ('06) is Director, Strategic Marketing at The Advisory Board

--Joe DiMatteo ('07) works in Sales for BlueDot Medical, Inc.,
