Welcome to Summer in the UK Department of Communication
The Department of Communication now has 24 faculty members with full appointments in the College of Communication and Information. The department also welcomed Dr. JiYoun Kim as a postdoctoral teaching fellow and Dr. Kelly McAninch to the faculty ranks. Dr. McAninch, a graduate of our communication program, will fully assume duties as Director of Undergraduate Studies in communication on July 1.
The Department of Communication has a growing undergraduate program, and offers a major and minor through which students gain communication knowledge and skills that they can apply in seeking solutions to local, state, national and global problems. Communication is also the home department to the certificate program in Health Communication in which students develop expertise in patient-provider communication, communication and illness across the lifespan, health communication services and systems.
Faculty in the Department of Communication continue to teach the majority of courses in the graduate program in Communication in the College of Communication and Information. The College offers top-ranked Master of Arts and PhD degrees with training in applied communication.
Faculty research and teaching specialties have diversified as our faculty has grown. Specialties now include the areas of language and social interaction; global communication, networks, organizational and strategic communication; risk and health communication; interpersonal communication and persuasion; media effects, sports communication, and entertainment studies.
Our undergraduate students participate in research and engagement activities sponsored by the Communication Student Association and Lambda Pi Eta honors organization. More students than ever are participating in our internship program, directed by Ms. Cyndy Miller. Students and internship sponsors gathered at Awesome, Inc. in the spring to honor our long-term internship sponsors, including the Ray Larson’s District Attorney’s Office. We also recognized our newest internship sponsor, LexEffect. These valuable experiences provide our students with the background they need to succeed in the workforce.
We also are delighted to announce the promotion of Dr. Allison Scott to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Communication! In the past five years leading to tenure, Dr. Scott won the College’s Award For Faculty Excellence in Teaching and Research. Her work also was recently featured as part of a UK Research promotional video.
We are proud of our recent graduates who are entering emergent professional fields of digital communication, marketing, and non-profit development; who are becoming event planners, organizers, and human resource officers; and who were accepted to prestigious law schools in Kentucky and nationally (including Yale). We love hearing news of alumni success!
We invite you to explore this newsletter and our website to learn more about our mission; our undergraduate programs; our research and publications; and our community engagement activities.
All the best,
Elisia L. Cohen, Ph.D
